Things you should know about Harry Potter .

•Harry Potter series has included eight movies in 10 years, in excess of $6 billion at the global box office, worldwide book sales of the Potter saga in excess of 450 million and Warner Bros. Pictures’ $100 million acquisition of Leavesden Studios where it filmed the movies.

•  The two Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows films are the first in the Harry Potter series to be released in cinemas in complete 3D versions. For Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince only some scenes were available.

• In the epilogue in Deathly Hallows Part 2 the cast play their characters in the future, using a combination of prosthetics, computer generated imagery and convincing acting.

 • Radcliffe has been through 160 pairs of glasses during the shooting of all the Harry Potter films

• Harry’s infamous scar has been put on by makeup approx 5,800 times. This is not only on Daniel Radcliffe, who has had the scar applied approx 2,000 times, but also on his doubles and stunt doubles, all of whom wear the scar.

• Daniel Radcliffe wore out 60-70 wands during the making of the Harry Potter films.

• Wands are 13-15 inch long and haven’t changed in length, so the actors have had to grow into them over the years.

• Forty versions of Salazar Slytherin’s locket had to be created to accommodate Ron and Harry’s failed attempts to destroy it.

• Five 32-ton trucks’ worth of polystyrene were needed to create all the rubble for Deathly Hallows.

• 250 paintings have been created for the Marble Staircase

• 210,000 coins were made for the Gringotts bank scene for the final two films alone.

• In railway speak, the actual name of the engine in Harry Potter is the ‘Hogwarts Castle’. The ‘Hogwarts Express’ is the name of
the service route that takes students from Platform 9¾ to the school.

• The largest amount of animals on set on any given day was 60 animals for a scene in Professor McGonagall’s classroom.

• There have been 250 animals used across the Harry Potter film series (not including insects).

• Over 600 school uniforms have been created for Harry Potter

• The scenes with the largest number of cast and extras to dress have been the battle scenes in Harry Potter and the Deathly
Hallows, with 400 Death Eaters and Snatchers and the Great Hall scenes with 400 children and teachers present.

• J.K. Rowling is the first person to become a billionaire (US dollars) by writing books.

• Rowling discovered ‘witchy’ sounding names such as toadflax, goutwort, grommel, and others in Culpeper’s Complete
Herbal, a famous book of herbal lore from the 1600s.

• Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was released on July 21, 2007, and sold 11 million copies on the first day of its release,
breaking Rowling’s earlier records for the fastest selling book of all time.

• Several publishers rejected the first Harry Potter manuscript saying it was too long and literary, but Bloomsbury Publisher
finally accepted it in 1996. The book’s publisher suggested Rowling use the name ‘J. K.’ rather than her real name ‘Joanne
Rowling’ to appeal to male readers. She took the ‘K’ from her grandmother’s name Kathleen, but neither ‘Kathleen’ nor ‘K’ is
part of her legal name.

• So many fans visit King’s Cross station, London to take pictures of platforms 9 and 10 that the station management erected a
sign that says “Platform 9 ¾” which, in the Potter books, is invisible to Muggles but acts as a gateway for witches and wizards.
